Email Interface
From ASSPSMTP
What is the Email Interface?
The Email Interface is a method of interacting with ASSP using normal SMTP communication.
It allows users to:
- Report false positive spam detections.
- Report spam messages not detected by ASSP.
- Add or remove addresses from the Whitelist.
- Add or remove addresses from the Redlist.
All by sending messages to special addresses (aka: interfaces) configured in ASSP.
Using the Email Interface
The default interface names are shown below.
assp-spam -- to report spam messages that was not detected assp-notspam -- to report legitimate messages that were determined to be spam
assp-white -- for WhiteList additions assp-notwhite -- for WhiteList removals
assp-red -- for RedList additions assp-notred -- for RedList removals
These addresses can be changed to suit your preferences.
- Full addresses can not be used in these fields, only the userpart of the email address is needed.
Examples:
Assuming that your local-domain is mydomain.com,
- To add addresses to the whitelist, create a message to assp-white@mydomain.com.
- You can either put the addresses in the body of the message, or as recipients of the message.
- To report undetected spam, forward the message to assp-spam@mydomain.com.
- It is preferable to forward it as an attachment, but you can forward messages inline also.
- Be sure to remove any automatically added signatures from forwarded messages.
In a short time you should receive a confirmation message if they are enabled.
The process is the same to report a False Positive, but send it to assp-notspam@mydomain.com.
Who can use the Email Interface?
- To use the Email Interface it must first be enabled in "Email Interface" section of the ASSP web interface.
Any connection meeting one of the following criteria by one of these will (a) be able to relay mail, and (b) be able to access the email interface:
- Messages from a "Accept All Mail" host
- Messages with an "SMTP AUTH" affirmative response from your MTA
- Messages sent through the "Relay Port"
- Messages approved for relaying by POP before SMTP
- Messages from an email address listed in "Allow Emails from this outbound addresses"
- This feature allows external senders to use the Email Interface. e.g. Gmail accounts.
Tips
If you wanted to add all the addresses in your address book to the whitelist, create a message to assp-white@mydomain.com and then add your entire address book to the BCC part of the message and click send. Note that no mail will be delivered to any address except assp-white@mydomain.com (and that won't actually be passed to your mail transport). Within a short time (depending on your mail server) you'll receive a response from ASSP showing the results of your message if confirmations are enabled, if responses are enabled.
